Why does marijuana make me feel like I am suffocating?

Every time I get high, regardless of the mood I am entering into it, I begin to feel like I cannot breathe or speak, and accomplishing either task takes a very concentrated effort. I get very frightened, feel very isolated - its a living hell. The obvious thing to do and say is…stop smoking marijuana. But I am really concerned because I haven’t heard of anyone having this reaction time and time again. I have never once felt relaxed or euphoric from it. I just wonder what it is about me or about my brain that makes me so averse to this substance that has helped so many others…

Marijuana contains a chemical called THC, which, among other things, changes brain chemistry. That’s why you get high. You literally change the way your brain works. Which, of course is dangerous. Because different people’s brain chemistry is different, it affects people in different ways.

A better question is, if it makes you feel this way, why in the world would you continue to smoke it? If by chance you are smoking this for medicinal purposes, then consult your doctor right away and see if he/she can prescribe something else. Best wishes to you.

I don’t know…sounds like extreme paranoia to me. The obvious answer IS to stop smoking it - it obviously doesn’t agree with you, and if all you experience is what you describe, why on Earth do you keep putting yourself through it?

I have talked to people who this happens to as well. I could get into my theories on the matter, but I will save you my quasi physiological ramblings. Point is, dont smoke the stuff. No big. Caffeine affects people differently too.. why? Because as (see above) said, everyone’s body chemistry is different. That’s why people act differently when they drink as well. Just because other people can do it doesnt make it safe, or ok. So if it makes you feel like crap, just dont do it. If you want respite for your thoughts, seek traditional meds.

The marijuana is causing you to have anxiety - which is leading to a panic attack. It happens to some people.

It’s similar to the way some people become paranoid from smoking.

That’s just how your mind is effected by the weed. I don’t know if it’ll change. Your brain may always react this way. It’s a gamble.
